Knowing how much mulch you need is the first step to planning your project. Buying too little can mean extra trips for more material, while buying too much can leave you paying for mulch you don't use.
The easiest way to estimate mulch is by measuring the length and width of each landscape bed. Once you know the square footage, you can calculate how many cubic yards of mulch you'll need based on the depth you plan to install.

How Is Mulch Measured?
Mulch is sold by the cubic yard, while landscape beds are measured in square feet.
That means you first measure the size of your beds, then convert that measurement into the amount of mulch needed.
Approximate Mulch Coverage
Most landscape beds should be covered with approximately 2–3 inches of mulch. The chart below uses a 3-inch installation depth for easy estimating.

What Affects How Much Mulch You Need?

What Depth Should Mulch Be Installed?
For most landscape beds, mulch should be installed at approximately 2–3 inches deep.
