You should only mow during a drought if the grass is still actively growing and actually needs to be cut.
During hot, dry weather, many Wisconsin lawns slow down or go dormant. When that happens, mowing too often can add stress and make the lawn look worse.
If the grass is not growing, there is no reason to keep mowing just because it is on the calendar. The better move is to watch the lawn conditions and adjust as needed.

Do Not Mow Just to Mow
During drought, the goal is not to force the lawn to look perfect.
Cool-season lawns can slow down during hot, dry periods. Some lawns may turn brown and go dormant as a survival response.
If the grass is barely growing, mowing does not help much. It can actually create more stress.
A good mowing schedule should follow lawn conditions, not just the calendar.
Raise the Mowing Height During Heat
During hot or dry weather, taller grass is usually better.
For Wisconsin lawns, we like mowing around 3.5 to 4 inches during hotter months. Taller grass helps shade the soil, protect the crown of the plant, and reduce stress during dry conditions.
Cutting short during drought is one of the fastest ways to make a lawn look rough.
Avoid Cutting Too Much at Once
The one-third rule still matters during drought.
Avoid cutting off more than one-third of the grass blade at one time. If the lawn does grow tall after rain, it is better to bring it back down gradually instead of scalping it all at once.
A drought-stressed lawn does not recover as quickly, so mowing choices matter more.
Irrigated Lawns Are Different
A lawn with irrigation may still need regular mowing during dry weather.
If the lawn is being watered, treated, and actively growing, mowing can continue like normal. It may still be smart to raise the mowing height during heat, but the lawn can usually handle mowing better than a dry, dormant lawn.
That is why two lawns on the same street can need different schedules.

During drought, I look at the lawn before the schedule.
If the grass is still growing, we mow it. If it is dry, crunchy, and barely moving, mowing can do more harm than good.
In hot weather, I would rather see the lawn cut a little taller and left alone when it is stressed than cut short just because it has been a week.
